Tag Rugby Rules
1. Pleasure – The most important rule is to have fun and enjoy your match. Remember that both the opposition and the match referee are all there to enjoy tag also!
2. No Contact – There is no contact allowed in Tag. Accidental, clumsy or deliberate contact will be penalised. The referee may award a penalty to the defending team if two players are running towards the ball and he/she predicts that contact may occur.
3. Respect – Players should respect the referee at all times. Abuse (foul language etc) will NOT be tolerated. Yellow cards will be issued and the player sin binned for 5 minutes.
4. Safety - Jewellery, watches, or items that may scratch or injure players are not permitted. Players should wear the appropriate footwear for the field and weather conditions on the day.
5. Equipment – All Tag players should wear ASIE-approved match shorts/belts and tags. In case of belts, your shirt should be tucked in at all time to avoid covering the tags.
6. Team – Teams are 7 players on the field including 1 female player, with a squad of 12 players maximum per game. The team may agree on a different minimum of female players on the pitch at the beginning of the game. Unlimited substitution is allowed during stoppages.
7. Scoring – The aim of Tag is to score as many tries as possible by touching the ball down on the ground, either on or over the opposition try line. 1 point for male scorers, 3 points for female scorers.
8. Duration – The game lasts 22 minute with two 10 minute halfs with a 2 minute break. The team may agree prior to the game to a different duration. You should notify the referee before kick-off.
9. Defence – Defenders must try to pull a tag off the attacking player who is carrying the ball.
10. Restart Marker – When a tag is removed, the defender places the tag on the ground at the point where the ‘tag’ was made, signalling the mark for the attacking ‘roll ball’.
11. Roll Ball – The player who was ‘tagged’ must roll the ball through his legs with their hands to another team player called the ‘dummy half’. He can either pass or run with the ball. This is the main way to restart play and is used after each ‘tag’.
12. 5m Off-side Line – On start and restart, the defending team must stand 5 metre back for roll balls and penalties. The referee will mark this imaginary line. An off-side is called if the defending team crosses than this line before the restart (sanction = penalty).
13. Advantage – The rule applies during the game. The duration is at the referee’s discretion.
14. Tag count – Each attacking team has 5 tags in which to score a try. On the 6th tag, the ball is awarded to the defending team. The restart is a roll ball.
15. Knock-on – Players are not allowed to pass the ball forwards. If they drop the ball on the ground forward or run out of the pitch boundaries, they will be penalised with a ‘turnover’ and a roll ball to the opposition.
16. Line out – If the ball carrier or the ball goes out of the side-line, there is a turnover. The restart is a roll-ball 5m in the field at the line out point.
17. Blocked tag – Players are not allowed to block their tags with their hands, the ball or their team shirts. If you do block your tag, then a penalty is awarded to the defending team.
18. Play on – If an attacking player is ‘tagged’ after or while passing the ball, the referee is calles “play on, ball away”. The game carries on. The attacker may finish the play with a single tag.
19. Kick off – Start and restarts after a try are taken from half way. This is a drop kick by the team that scored and must go 10 metres before the first bounce
20. Kicking – Grubber kicks along the ground can be used at any stage AS LONG AS the ball remains below 1.5 metre before bouncing. Dribbling is not authorized. (sanction - penalty)
